十一時の日本語のクラス

I thought the speech was a great way to wrap up the semester since it incorporated all of the learned materials into one assignment. Hard to believe the semester's over already... it went by so fast. But to my knowledge I will see several of you next semester in the 1:00 Japanese class. And maybe I'll see the two or three other engineers around Engineering Way (haha what a corny name) too.

Did the .wav file with our speeches work for anyone? It gave me an error.

I haven't posted a video in awhile. This one's a Japanese beat doll... I've never seen one like this before (ie, it actually changes dancing patterns) so I was sort of in a trance staring at it but maybe I'm the only one that finds this interesting.

Editing

I thought it helped. I have a hard time enough as it is in this class so I appreciate others helping me out with this speech. I try to give constructive feedback; whether it helps or not I'm not sure, though I hope I'm not totally useless at it.

I doubt anyone will see this before tomorrow morning, but I'm confused as to what's due tomorrow. It says "comments/thoughts on 2nd draft". Is this the whole "bringing ideas to class" thing?

Not my entry for the week

I'll edit this post later in the week with some nihongo. Only making this post for easy access to my culture video from the eru-eru

If you have time, watch this next one - it's tsumaranakuarimasen. DEMO: not everything in the video is culturally accurate but rather just there for humor

ALSO - I *may* show some of the second video in the lab if I rush through my presentation and finish in under 3 minutes because I'll most likely blank out and forget something since I'm typing this at 2:10 AM and still have to finish memorizing the vocab for the quiz we just had. If that's the case, I'll try to point out any inaccuracies in the video that may show up.

日本のゲームショーはawesomeですよ!

Just came across this a very short while ago. I'm not even going to wait until らいしゅう to post this, I'm posting this いま。

KPop anyone?

I came across this KPop ビデオ the other day which I think is pretty funny so I'll post it.

What surprised me is the ビデオ has over 三十六万 views and it was only added 五 days ago. I think it's 四ばん most viewed in the おんがくcategory こんしゅう (and 二十三 overall) or something like that. You usually don't see overseas artists ahead of the mainstream アメリカじん artists so I guess that's why I think it's ちょっと unusual (but I'm glad to see it -いいですね!)

Anyway, I'm glad I'm taking this class not only because I like 日本ご but also because it relieves some of the pressure of my other classes (三 コンピューターサイエンスのクラス と すうがく). My next smallest class has 五十人 so it's also nice to be in a more relaxed atmosphere (not to be confused with easy). でもこんしゅうはOKでした。

To answer the posed question: blogs are intended to be personal. It can be a biography of what the blogger did since they last updated, an in-depth discussion on a hobby of theirs, or anything else related to their own life. I also don't think a blog should be like a formal essay that you turn in for English class because then it's hard to pick up on the blogger's personality, which is a key aspect of blogging.
Example:
BAD: Today I was determined to arrive at my multivariate calculus class on time. Unfortunately, I was unsuccessful in my endeavor because I strolled past a comrade of mine who noticed me and promptly began to strike up a conversation about the previous examination we took in our Introduction to Psychology class last week.
GOOD: I wanted to be on time for calc today but I bumped into a friend and started talking about last week's psych exam so I ended up being late.

Probably not the best example, but you get the idea. That's my 二 cents on the subject.

I get up at 5am on weekends to go to a 5-hour yoga class

And I also eat houses.

Those are among some of the stupid things I've said this past week. I notice I'm usually called on when I least expect it haha.

Anyway, it felt like this week was busier than most weeks despite the fact we had the first two days off. Maybe it's because all my midterms are scattered now instead of clumped together so I feel like I have more to do all the 時 rather than all at once. I don't know.

Oh well, time for winter. きょうはさむいでした。(fully aware that sentence is most likely not grammatically correct).

Here's a video from an artist I think everyone has heard of, whether it be from the song in the Kingdom Hearts commercials (Simple and Clean) or somewhere else.

Yay, a break!

Today was one of the worst days for me this year in terms of quizzes and tests but I'll be so relieved to have a break, even if it's only a few days. There's been so much to do for this class this week and I still may have to edit my さかぶん (there's nothing wrong with it now but I might end up adding something).

But at least there's a long weekend ahead! And since I don't have a Japanese music video to post right now, I'll post a video game originally from Japan! It's called Super Monkey Ball - funny name, I know. But I'm really into arcade-style games like this where the only purpose of the game is to roll a ball across a course to a goal or something simple like that. Below is a video sample - the person playing (not me, haha) is incredibly good so it may be a little hard to follow what's going on (and youtube also botched the quality).

Some study habits

I already made a post this week but I figure I should discuss the topic at hand.

When I took Japanese in 8th grade, my teacher came up with some very helpful phrases/ways to memorize some ひらがな and カタカナ. Imagine the cross-like figure in any of the following examples to be a person. The bold parts are the actual pronunciation.

あ: "aa! There's a snake around my leg!"
い: ears
う: "uu! A brick fell on my back!"
え: excercise
さ: sa-fin (surfing... ok, that one's lame)
し: she has long hair
す: Sue is pregnant
き: it looks like a key
く: kuku bird
け: an old guy with a cane
に: looks like a knee
の: no smoking sign
ち: cheerleader
つ: tsunami
て: looks like a table leg
と: "ow, I stubbed my toe"
ひ: "heehee" (laughing)
ふ: Mt. Fuji
り: really long ears

Those are most of the ones I remember for ひらがな. I don't remember as many for カタカナ so I'll hold off on those.

And to practice reading some にほんご, here's another J-pop music video, but with subtitles this time (えいごとにほんご!). The video itself is very weird... but I recognized several words/phrases thanks to the subtitles which felt pretty rewarding in a sense. Song is Lonely in Gorgeous by Tommy February6 (a very unique J-pop artist in my opinion).

JAPN 202 Movie - げんき III

At the end of the spring semester (I'm pretty sure we don't do this in the fall), anyone in a Japanese class works with their peers to make a movie in groups of about five, I think.

Anyway, below is a movie from one of the JAPN 202 classes last spring - げんき III. It follows the かいわ from the text. I believe this movie went way above the requirements (I don't think they have to be 30 minutes). So if you have a little over 30 minutes of free time sometime soon, watch it! I didn't realize how intense the かいわ gets in our book...

Hoo has a lot of exams next week?

This week was pretty smooth for me with the exception of a calc quiz today and, of course, all of the studying for Japanese. I got some time to browse youtube, play Wii, and twiddle my thumbs while blankly staring at the tree right outside my window all in the same week which hardly ever happens. Next week will be just the opposite of that, as I have to prepare to take a quiz or test everyday except Tuesday (which is bad enough since I have a little more than 6 consecutive hours of classes that day). Hooray for libraries. :)

So... time for yet another Japanese music video. Actually, I'm going with two this week. The first one is a slow song, 'Goodbye' by Kaori Natori f/ Nao'ymt. But since the uploader disabled embedding, I'll just link to it.
Kaori Natori

And since I absolutely must have a video on every post, here's another J-Pop video - this one's by AI, the first female signed to Def Jam Japan:

Introduction (English version)

So, since I can't say much in Japanese quite yet, I'll make an English intro.

I'm a 2nd year in the e-school majoring in computer science. Here's what my schedule looks like this semester:
JAPN 101 First Year Japanese (4)
APMA 212 Multivariable Calculus (4)
CS 201 Software Development Methods (3)
CS 202 Discrete Math (3)
CS 230 Digital Logic Design (3)
PHYS241W Physics II Lab (1)

My least favorite subject in the entire world is physics. I strongly dislike it with a passion and am so glad I took my final required lecture this past summer, though I still have to deal with a lab this semester on Tuesdays from 12-1:50 in the physics building, inconveniently placed 10 minutes after Japanese is supposed to end but that's my own fault since I try to avoid taking late classes. Therefore, I usually do one of those awkward fast walks out of Cabell and down McCormick every Tuesday after class.

As for why I'm taking Japanese... I like so much about Japan. Examples - the music, the video games (lol), the language (duh), *some* of their food (I was never a big sushi person...). I've tried teaching myself Japanese before though that didn't last long. I figure the best way to learn is through classes.

I was exposed to J-Pop about four or five years ago. Some of my favorite artists are AI, Tommy February6, and most notably Kaori Natori.

Anyway... I should probably go to bed soon so I'm not late to my first class like I was today. I'll end with a video again. Last time I posted a video from a non-Japanese artist so this time I think I'll do the opposite. Here's a video from the Teriyaki Boyz (Heartbreaker), covering a song from Daft Punk (though I forget which one).

おやすみなさい!

Moby

I figure I might carry on this blog after Japanese is over since I'm a computer science major and that's one way to follow the stereotype. Since I can't think of anything else right now, I'll just post a song (in English and French) by Moby, one of my favorite electronic artists.
